13 Tools That Make Blogging Easier

December 3, 2013 | By Dee Ann Rice

Post image for 13 Tools That Make Blogging Easier

No matter what you are doing, in order to do it well the proper tools are necessary.

A great carpenter uses the proper tools to create furniture or cabinets from plain pieces of wood and a metal worker has a different set of tools to make items out of metal.

In the same way bloggers need to have a good set of tools in order to created great content.

Here are some of the tools I use and would recommend these to all bloggers.

wordpress

WordPress.Org

WordPress.org is a great blogging platform. It is self hosted which means you have to purchase hosting for your blog. I would highly recommend wordpress.org over other blogging platforms that offer free hosting.

If you want to know more about self hosted vs. hosted blogging platforms read How Should I Host My Blog?.

Photoshop

Photoshop

I love this program. I can make my own graphics with it or edit a graphic to be just the way I want it. It is a pretty easy program to learn and there are great tutorials all over the internet if you need help with any part of Photoshop.

Photoshop is fabulous for editing images. Photoshop Made Easy — Part 1: Removing Backgrounds, Photoshop Made Easy — Part 2: Actions, Photoshop Made Easy — Part 3: Blending Images, Photoshop Made Easy — Part 4: Styles

snagit

Snagit

This is another great program. Snagit is similar to Photoshop but they both have their place. The great thing about Snagit is it can do a variety of screen captures. I used Snagit to make the graphics you see above the name of each tool in this post.

Snagit can also be used to do some simple image editing. The great thing about editing images with Snagit is it is really easy. There is nothing difficult. It is basically point and click. You really do not need to learn anything in order to use Snagit for editing.

camtasia

Camtasia

Camtasia is a video recording and editing program. I use this program for all of my screen capture videos I have make for my posts or YouTube.

This is another program that I don’t know what I would do without it. It is really simple and very user friendly.

Videos are a great way create fabulous content for your blog and Camtasia is the best way I know of to edit your videos. Why Videos?

blogpadpro

BlogPad Pro

This is a program for the iPad. If you own an iPad this is a must have App. I think it costs $4.95 and is well worth every cent.

BlogPad Pro is a program that you can use to write posts for WordPress.org. You can write posts online or offline which works great for me since I spend a lot of time where I do not have access to the internet.

I think this is the greatest program ever. It has lots of functionality and makes writing blog posts really simple.

Pocket

Pocket

Pocket is another program that I use because I am offline a lot. This is so easy to use. All you have to do is save posts you want to read later to Pocket. The really great thing though is you can then read the post on a number of devices. If you own an iPhone or iPad all you have to do is install the Pocket app and you can read those posts you saved while on your computer. You do not need to be online in order to read the saved posts.

Adrienne Smith writes a great post about pocket if you want to know more about it. When There Is More Content Than Time

buffer

Buffer

Do you ever wish you could tweet about a post or share it on Facebook at a later time. If so then this is the tool for you.

Buffer lets you schedule a tweet or share for a later time. Maybe you are commenting on posts when most of your followers are sleeping. Buffer is a great way to have those tweets and shares go live when your followers will be on Twitter or Facebook.

windowlivewriter

Windows Live Writer

This is a program that I have just recently started using. In the past I always wrote my post in the visual/text editor within the WordPress program. Then Adrienne told me about Windows Live Writer and I love it. This program is very similar to BlogPad Pro only it is for use on a computer. I love the functionality of Windows Live Writer. There are so many more ways to edit a post using Windows Live Writer compared to the limited funtionality of the visual/text editor in WordPress.

I would highly recommend using Windows Live Writer to write your WordPress posts.

feedly

Feedly

Feedly is a reader very similar to the old Google Reader. I like to use a reader to keep track of who has posted something new. I can go to one page and see who has posted something recently or find something that I have not read.

triberr

Triberr

Triberr is a program that makes getting your post seen by lots of people easy.

After you enroll in Triberr you join one or more tribes. The people in these tribes will tweet your posts as you post them. This will get your content in front of lots of people. If you use Triberr consistently you will see the traffic to your blog increase enormously. Can You Navigate Triberr?

aweber

AWeber**

If you are using your blog to make money then you need to build a list. An auto responder is necessary in order to build that list. There are several different auto responders out there but I like AWeber. It is easy to use and reasonably priced.

The last two tools are plugins. I think every blog should have these plugins. They are fantastic.

commentluv

CommentLuv Premium**

CommentLuv is a plugin that combines 8 plugins into one and also allows your commenters to leave a link to one of their posts in every comment.

sharejuicepro

Share Juice Pro

Share Juice Pro combines at least 5 plugins into one. With Share Juice Pro Sharing your post becomes easier and more efficient.

What About You?

What do you think about the tools needed to blog? Do you have tools you would recommend that are different than mine? Do you use some of the same ones that I do?

I love comments and would love to hear your opinions so leave me a comment and let me know what you think or just say “Hi”. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hey Dee Ann,

Boy do I ever agree with you about these. I use all of these but PhotoShop, which I find way over my head, and BlogPad Pro. You know I don’t have an iPad and probably not going to get one any time soon either.

Whenever I am away from home and will need to work on my blog I’ll probably take my lap top with me. Every place I go will have a WiFi connection but I get really nervous about using those too. I’m such a chicken…

These are all great tools and of course, I use almost all of them and don’t know how I’d get along without them now. You become so use to using them that I would hate for them to disappear. Modern conveniences right!

Thanks for sharing this great list and hope you have a wonderful week.

Hi Dee-Ann,

Thanks for a great list of tools. I use quite a few of these, but you’ve missed out my favourite – Evernote – I couldn’t live without that one! I also like to use Paint.net, which is a very simple tool for making basic alterations to images – very quick and easy to use.

Sue,

I never successfully used Evernote. I know a lot of people do use it.

I have actually started out using it several times but never figured it out. I guess it is one of those things I just did not commit enough time to in order to figure it out.

I have not heard of Paint.net. Probably because I have always had photoshop and just use it.

Thanks for you additions to the tools I mentioned in my post. I am sure there will be many people who will benefit from your suggestions.

Thank you for stopping by and for your thoughts.

Max,

I am sure you already have your answer but I think Camtasia can work with your camera on your Mac. I use it with a camera on my PC. Other than that I don’t know much about it.

Thanks for your comment.

hi dee ann; well yes i have an answer but not from anyone who saw my question here. There is a lady who does youtube tutorials. Her first name is angela. she did a show on camtasiia and its on my list now. since i will have to continue doing my youtube shows from the house i love th ability to put photos up on the screen while i am talking in the background. I think this would be a big help to me for those items where the owner provided lots of photos but no videos. thanks for your detection in answering all your comments as soon as you were able to. take care, max

Hi Dee-Ann,

Awesome, I see I am using every one of those except for AWeber (I use MailChimp) and Share Juice Pro (I use AddThis). Always good to know I’m not being left behind :-).

My understanding is that Windows Live Essentials 2012 will be the last release and that components like Live Writer will no longer be supported. Is that correct? That’s a shame, but for now Windows users will continue to enjoy Live Writer. For writing, I like MarsEdit 3 on the Mac and the iPad WordPress app.

Cole,

I am sorry that my reply is so late. My life seemed to fall apart the end of last year and I have spent the beginning of this year getting everything taken care of.

I guess I will use Live Writer while I can and change when it is no longer available.

Thanks for your comment and for stopping by my blog.

Dee Ann, great tools! I would say Buffer, ShareJuice, CommentLuv and Triberr are my top 4 favs! I would add my Droid phone as I do a lot on the go and could not accomplish it all without it. I have many apps there like WordPress, Pinterest, Twitter, FB and more to accomplish a lot. I can’t imagine what blogging was like before these tools Dee Ann!

Hi Dee Ann

What a great list.
Most of these tools I am using but a few new ones in there for me. Pocket I think I read also on Adrienne’s blog, but I have not gone out and used it yet, despite having a huge need (more content than time indeed).
thanks for collecting this

Great list of tools. I am using all of the tools except Photoshop, Camstasia and Windows Live Writer. At the moment, my favorite tool is Byword. That’s probably because I have just bought it and it’s a great way to write and publish what I’ve written (either to wordpress or Evernote). And, I use Evernote to store all my notes and ideas, it works great for a blogger and solopreneur.

Hi Dee Ann,

Nice list. I used Camtasia (not anymore because it needs a lot of resources), Buffer and Feedly.

I use Triberr, Aweber and CommentLuv Premium. I also use Jing for my photos.

I would love to use Photoshop but for the moment the price is a little bit to high.

My research at present is related to programs that create and edit photos. I am doing researches on Canvas and Pixlr.

Have a wonderful day

I’m only using 2 of the things on your list, Wordpress and CommentLuv Premium. I don’t like blog networks, don’t have time to learn Photoshop, and the other stuff… never heard of them. lol Strangely enough, none of those I haven’t heard of are calling my name, so I guess I’m good.
