A Fish Story!

by Dee Ann Rice on July 2, 2011

fishingcartoonIt was Saturday morning so my husband, Bill, wanted to go fishing. We asked my cousin, Gary, to go with us and my 14 year old son, Noah, went along as well.

You may be saying what does this have to do with any kind of marketing on the internet.

Well, as I sat and watched Noah while we were fishing all I could think is “this is what I have been reading about this past week”. I have read several posts and article on the topic of what I call “preparing vs. doing”.

We fish mainly for Crappies (said Croppies) like the one below.  So I just use the same bait all of the time.  I am not picky and the fish do not seem to be either.

crappie

I usually catch the most fish of anyone in the boat, much to my husband’s disgust since he taught me how to fish, so what does it matter which bait I use as long as I catch fish.

noah1

Bill, Gary and I start out fishing while Noah starts preparing his line with just the right hook, swivel, lure, crappie nibble, you name it.

You see him to the left fixing up his line while Gary is fishing.

By the time I had caught my first fish Noah finally had his line ready to go in the water.   There he is on the right with some really fancy lure, that crappies will probably not bite on, ready to fish.noah2

That lasted a few minutes and I caught a couple more fish.  Bill and Gary were catching fish.  We were not catching a lot and some were small so we had to throw them back but we were catching fish off and on.

Oh, that lure must not of worked.  There is Noah again getting more tackle out and he has already changed his lure in the picture below.

noah3

Lets not forget that all of this work getting ready for fishing had made him hungry so he had to take a break and eat a bagel.

Meanwhile he has still not caught a fish but has spent a lot of time preparing.

Now, he is so exhausted from preparing for fishing and eating he has to take a nap.

I think you probably get the picture by now.noah4

In the end we kept about 9 really nice fish and threw back about as many.  It was not a great day out fishing.  We have gone out and caught 30 or 40 before but we did OK and all had fun.

Noah however did not catch a single fish.  He spent more time then anyone else preparing and at one point even created his own bait (we use little plastic things that look like worms) out of something he had in his tackle box.

My same bait that I have used many times over, has resided on my pole for at least a year and the fish have nibbled on so it is not all there, allowed me to catch more fish than anyone else in the boat.

Now back to what does this have to do with any kind of marketing or anything on the internet.

Noah reminds me of myself a lot of times when it comes to marketing or blogging or what ever it is I am doing on the internet or for that matter whatever business endeavor I am involved in at the time.

I like many people tend to spend a lot of time getting ready to do something.  Through all of the preparation I never seem to actually get around to doing what it is that I have set out to do.

Meanwhile other people are just doing it and getting ahead a lot faster than I am.

I have read so many articles and posts lately talking about this type of thing, so when I watched Noah it really struck me.  I thought I would give this example as it is kind of comical but really hit home for me.

I have to remember to do and not prepare.  It does not matter if I have the best looking website, that can be improved on over time.  I don’t need just the right fonts, I can always go back and change them and I could go on and on.  I just need to get the website up.  I need to start writing posts, even if they are kind of funny like this one.  I am just using these as examples as I am already doing them, not to say they don’t need improving on.  There are lots of things I need to start doing instead of planning though as I am sure you have those things also.

So if this is you, you are not alone.  We all do this or at least most of us do.  If you are the person that does not I do not want to offend you.  We just need to be more like you.

I am starting a new business venture along with my internet marketing.  I am determined to be a doer and not a planner in this new venture.  I want to be successful and the way I will get there is by doing, even if it is not perfect.  If you want to know more about my new business venture check out the tab “work with me” under Pages in the sidebar.

The next time you catch yourself planning and planning and planning, stop and think about this funny little post and start doing.

Hope someone got something out of this.  It was kind of fun to write and I told Noah I was going to do it.  Now I am going to have him read it in hopes that maybe he will start doing and not preparing.

I hope you are all enjoying your weekend and for those Americans have a great 4th of July.  Everyone else can enjoy the 4th of July also as you have one too, it is just not a holiday for you.

Hi Dee,

I have read many posts about this related topic, the main theme is there comes a time when you have to stop learning, preparing, planning and START DOING. Don’t get caught up!

This blog post says it all. I really like the analogy you used here. It truly makes you understand. As the saying goes, JUST DO IT! JUMP RIGHT IN! .

AS you say, you can make adjustments as you go along. Don’t worry learning will happen as you go along.

Move forward by doing. TAKE ACTION! Without ACTION NOTHING HAPPENS.

Terry,

Thanks for your comment.

There has been a lot written on this lately especially with the Master Class Blog Carnival but I could not pass it up after watching Noah fishing all day Saturday.

Glad that you were able to get something out of it.

Thanks for stopping by.

Hey Dee Ann

Now there is a perfect example of being personal in a blog post, having FUN and sharing value too.

You made a very important point about over planning, but I noticed ANOTHER valuable point you made too…

…when Noah decided to try his own “bait”, you see the point here… why try something completely NEW when you already have something that is proven to work!

I am all for trying new things, don’t get me wrong…

But I would prob have a second rod with the new bait on there while I fished with the other rod with the proven bait ha ha.

Lovely story, I really enjoyed reading this blog post as you know I am a big fan of being personal when blogging, but more importantly I will REMEMBER your blog post.

CATCH you later (sorry bad joke I know I know)

Sally :)

Sally,

Thank you for your comment. It means a lot when you write a comment like that.

I was really nervous about doing that post but did it anyway (I guess I followed my own advice for once). I really enjoyed writing that and liked the post but had not done very many like that.

I know you are big on being personal in blog post and I like your posts because of that. You are a real person in your posts and I can relate to that. I like other peoples posts when they are person also. Was just nervous about doing it myself.

I thought about the second point of “why try something new when you already have something that is proven to work” but did not go into it. You are right though we so often try to “reinvent the wheel” and nothing works as well as a “round wheel”.

Thanks for your comment and love the joke at the end.

Hi De Ann

I would of loved to see your hubbies face when you caught more fish than him lol.

Men are always so competitive and wanna win you at everything so I bet that was hard to swallow, you catching more.

I am guilty of being a planner I’m afraid, always have been and always probably will be but I do take action on what I’ve planned so to me that’s okay lol

It’s when you’re always learning and planning and never taking action that’s the problem.

Like Sally said – you don’t have to go and reinvent the wheel, just stick to proven methods and you won’t go wrong.

Really enjoyed your lil story Dee and good luck with your new venture.

Dawn,

Yes, the problem is when the action never happens because you are so obsessed with the planning and learning that no action ever takes place. That was Noah. He never got around to really fishing all day.

I always out fish my husband but he attributes it to the fishing pole that he bought me for my birthday. So I guess he takes his credit for it. I think it does bother him though.

I am loving my new venture but am not giving up the internet and blogging.

Thanks for stopping by.

Hi De Ann,
So it sound like ready fire aim is sometimes a more productive strategy than ready aim fire. BTW I was once fishing for crappies and bluegills (sun fish) and noticed they going after bugs on the surface of the water. I decided to try fly fishing just for laughs but it worked fine and was a lot of fun.

Riley,

I don’t know if ready fire aim is more productive than ready aim fire, just the fire part has to happen and sometimes it never happens.

Your experience fishing for crappies sounds interesting. We have never tried that before.

Hi Dee Ann, That’s a great example of the fact that to much prep work and not enough practical just won’t get you the results that you think you want.

We have all been guilty of it at some time or another and it’s only by taking the actions required that we can move ahead. Like you said Dee Ann, the fonts don’t matter…. the words do……

I’ve just been over to your new venture page Dee Ann, it looks really exciting and as I just tweeted if people want to learn from mistakes, it’s far better to learn from someone elses

Best of luck with it Dee Ann,

Catch up soon, Barry

Barry,

I am sorry I am so late replying to this comment. I missed it for some reason.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

I am glad that you liked my story.

I really try to take action even if it means that everything is not perfect and for a perfectionist that is difficult.

I am learning not to try to be so perfect and just do things. Other wise nothing ever happens.

Thanks again and have a great week.

You remind me of a friend who used to say: “I can’t do it now. I have a lot to learn, I have a lot to learn, I have a lot to learn…” Well, there is no end to learning. As Eartha Kitt said “I am learning all the time. The tombstone will be my diploma.” :D

That is great. I love that saying.

We have to learn all of the time and can not wait till we have learned it all to do something about it.

Hi Dee Ann, I tend to procrastinate some, but on the whole I am a proactive person. I do prepare sometimes, but not always,. I think I somehow know when I need to prepare and when I don’t. It’s nice to have a balance. Good luck with your new venture.

Enjoy the journey.

Mandy,

A balance is good. What is the old saying “to much of anything is bad”.

Planning is definitively necessarily but only if it leads to action.

Sounds like you have a well rounded routine.

I enjoyed reading your story, but was waiting for you to say that Noah asked what bait you were using so he could get in the competition. You would have thought he would have tried something different ;)

I tend to go both ways on this – it actually depends on what it is I am working on and how exciting it is for me. If it is boring, I do eventually get it done but it takes a long time to do it. On the other hand if it is something I really enjoy, I will move a bit faster.

I am going to go check out what else you are up to after I get done writing this ;-)

Linda,

I was trying to think if he ever did ask what I was fishing with. Not sure if he did or not. If he did, he didn’t use it for long.

I am kind of the same way if I really like or am excited about something I really get in there and get it done but, if I am not I tend to procrastinate more.

The other time that I tend to spend more time preparing than doing is when I don’t really understand how to do something or I am nervous about what I am supposed to do. Then it seems like it is easier to spend the time getting ready and I can somehow justify it. I really try not to do that and if I don’t understand I try to find someone to help me.

Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Dee Ann,

Loved the story and darn… I guess Noah just couldn’t seem to get it together. I’m sure he felt like that was just too much work for him.

I can definitely relate myself. Until I started just jumping in there and “doing it”, I would think that I needed to learn more or I just didn’t know enough or my site didn’t look good, etc. I use to use the same excuses myself until recently. I made myself a promise that I was just going to do it and the rest would fall into place. Man, I’m so glad I took my own advice. It’s been a lot more fun now that I see results. You know, that’s what happens when you start doing the work. Everything will just fall into place.

Congrats on the new venture and I have no doubt you’ll be a huge success. You’re an action taker that’s why!

See you at the top.

Adrienne,

It is a whole lot more fun when you actually take action.

I am having a ball on my blog and am really seeing what happens when I take action.

Of course I am supposed to be creating a product and am not doing as well at that. I need to come up with something really good to create and then I will take off.

I plan on taking action on my new venture. I will succeed.

Hi Dee Ann,

I’ve got to admit … fishing bores me…lol
So I was more interested in what you’re up to??
hehe – Direct Sales and network marketing?… On one of those I have had years and years of success and the other just small bits here and there….lol

Do shout if I can help at all

Randy,

I was never much for fishing until I married my husband and he likes to go. So I go to spend time with him and I am under the opinion that I need to enjoy whatever I am doing as I will not get to spend that time again. So I became a fisherman or should that be fisherwomen.

I am doing network marketing but, am also still doing John Thornhill’s Master Class. I plan on doing both.

Which were you involved in Network marketing or direct sales. They kind of go hand in hand.

Thanks for your comment.

I was in direct sales for over 20 years…

I did dabble in network marketing – but never really managed to make a good income with it.
I did with one company – but then they changed their rules and my checks went right down… so I quit… (as it was supposed to be get paid for life – not until they changed the rules to keep most of the cash themselves…lol)

Hi Dee Ann

Hope all is well with you?

Loved the story and how you you got your point accross. As for fishing not my cup of tea, even if the fish was put on the hook for me I would probably lose it before I could land it! :-)

Most of us have fell into this trap as some point – with me I use to make my notes, schedule a plan of action, and then for some reason would easily get distracted by other things and never get on with the real task.

Now; it’s differnt I take action and try each day to take a positive step toward completing my daily tasks. Having planners and schedules has helped me a lot.

We can only achieve our goals and take action if we have the motivation – that burning desire to do so. Setting goals, and drawing up a plan is ultimately meaningless if you fail to take action to attain them.

Loved the post Dee Ann,

Catch up soon

Ian,

As I said in another reply, I never fished until I met my husband and fishing is his thing so, I do it with him. Figure I might as well make it fun while I am doing it.

When I see people that I see as successful saying that the fell into this trap, I think there is hope for me.

I am pretty good at taking action but I feel like I am constantly pulled in a million directions. I am really trying to do something so I get some time to just work and not be interrupted. I am making advances but I guess when you have kids those things happen.

Hi Dee,

I enjoyed reading your post. And as what I understood it,albeit you are using the same bait but you have still the power to get a number of fish than your husband and son. That is something amazing! In marketing there are so many competitors as well using the same niche but the visitors will always look for your own recipe no matter what.

Years already passed by and until now, I can still see my self in same position, same activity, same everything! Now, I’m trying to change things. Hopefully, things will work out soon.
