Are Your Posts And Comments Smiling?

Listen with webreader

Have you ever wondered how people get smiley faces in their blog posts or comments? ;-)

Maybe I am the only one who does not know how to do this.

I know it is really a simple concept.  I sometimes find the most obvious things are the things that so easily stump me.  I have put smileys many other places, but putting them into my posts and comments seemed overwhelming.

The other day when I received more comments with the cute little smilies, I decided that I had to figure out how to put these in my posts and comments.

I found that putting smilies into my posts to be quite simple.

I actually installed a plugin that added to my Kitchen Sink/Tool Bar above where I compose my post.  In this additional tool bar is a smiliey icon.  This makes it really simple.  I just have to click on the icon and it gives me the choice of several different smilies, I choose one and that smiley appears in my post.

The plug in I used was TinyMCE Advanced.  This plugin is very simple to install.

Go to “Plugins” in your WordPress back office and select “add new”.  Type in TinyMCE Advanced and click on search.  The following screen will come up.

You can see here that the plugin that we want to use is the top one. Click install and then activate after it is installed.

Once this is done your tool bar above where you compose your post will look like this.

You can just click on the smiley face and put smiles in your post.

I however found putting smiles in my comments to be somewhat more difficult.

This is actually what I started out wanting to do.  Don’t know why but I have never really found the need or desire to put smiles in my posts as of yet.  I did however want to put them in comments several times.

The problem with comments is there is no tool bar above where I compose comments with a smiley on it to click when I wanted to insert a :-(   smiley into a comment.

What I found though is it is not all that difficult to put the codes in for smilies.

I know that some html codes can be inserted into comments.  The problem is the ability to insert html into comments can be disabled.  For this reason I have avoided html in comments on the off chance the owner of the site disabled the html capability.

I am thinking that the smiley codes are not disabled when html is or at least that is what I am hoping.

I found this chart that tells how to include all of the smilies that WordPress allows.  Just type in the code where you want the smilie to be and it will show up after you submit your comment.

This is really simple, but just one of those things that struck me as being really complicated.

I hope this helped someone else also.  I am going to start including smilies in my comments now.

If you have any information on the topic of smilies that I did not cover here and think would be beneficial to me or anyone else, please leave a comment.

I love getting comment and would love to hear from you.

I know they’re there, but I have never used that icon. :D

Most of the smiley faces I use are these: :) , :D and ;)
I know their codes. So I don’t have to click on the icon to select them.

I see that I can use some of the codes you mentioned above. I didn’t know about them before. I really love these:

    Mouh,

I am glad that you found my post useful.

It is interesting the other things that are available besides the smilies. I can see you using those last four. They seem to fit you and your blog.

Thanks for stopping by and hope you have a great week.

  • Hi DeeAnn

Things are only simple if you know how to do them and sometimes the easy stuff is the hardest (if you know what I mean)

I know some of the smiley codes but not all of them so will be pinning your post for future reference…

Love your smiley chart by the way, very helpful

    Take care

    Dawn,

I always find the easy stuff the hardest. I think I “over think or analyze” stuff and if it is easy I completely miss it all together.

I did enjoy finding out how to use smilies even if it was very simple. I am actually using some of them now.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

    Have a great week.

  • Hi Dee Ann,

I must admit that I despise that plug-in mainly because it throws it way off to the right side and then I can’t scroll down when I’m working in creating my posts. I find it so annoying so I decided to uninstall it and to heck with it.

I’ve only included smiley faces in a couple posts but I just use the codes as well as using them in the comments too. But I will come across from time to time people who are using the codes and the HTML is not enabled and it looks kind of ridiculous. So I stick with the basics.

Thanks for sharing these codes though. I could use a few more of those. Will definitely be saving that one.

Hope you’ve had a great week and are looking forward to the weekend. Catch you soon.

    Adrienne,

I have found that the plugin throws things way off on the right hand side also but I guess I have been able to live with it to this point. Only installed it a short time ago so still deciding. Lately I have been on a mission to reduce the number of plugins on my blog as it is loading so slowly. I recently purchased CommentLuv Premium which helped out as it replaces several plugins. So who knows which ones I will end up with. They are all on the chopping block right now.

I have avoided using any HTML in my comments because of the ability to disable HTML. I agree HTML looks ridiculous when HTML coding is not enabled. I was not sure if the smiley codes would be disabled as well if HTML was disabled. I guess they are really a form of HTML.

Thanks for your thoughts and for stopping by.

I usually just use the codes, cause I know them..lol.

Just figured they show up in my posts, now that makes me want to go see if they do show up or not, but pretty sure they do without the plugin – but great info for those that don’t know them :)

I am sorry I did not respond to your comment earlier. Somehow I missed this comment.

I think a lot of people do know them but I just did not. I do like it when I see smilies in the comments people leave for me though.

Thank you again for stopping by.

    Have a great week.

    Azmee,

I like the smilies also. I think they dress up posts and comments.

You should think about changing to wordpress from blogger. You would just have to host your own website and get a domain name. Neither of which is hard or very costly.

    Thanks for stopping by.
