Duh, It Was In Front Of My Face The Whole Time

Listen with webreader

Have you ever had one of those moments when you realize that something you want to do on your blog and have never been able to figure out how to do it forever, is right in front of your face?

That was me the other night while I was on the phone with a friend.  I could not believe that what I had been really irritated with and wanted to change, could be changed and the way to change it was right in front of my face the whole time.

So, What am I talking about?

Have you ever wished that the box where we all compose our posts in the WordPress backoffice was bigger so you could see more that a few lines of text at a time?

If you answered Yes, then may be I am not the only one in the world that has had this problem.

If you answered No, then you are more on top of it then I am.

The box I am talking about is the one below:

You can only see about 5 or 6 lines and that would drive me crazy every time I would write a blog post.  I always felt like I wanted to scream “Make the Box Bigger”.

Then I was on the phone talking and writing at the same time and I saw this:

In the bottom right of the edit box.

If you put your curser on these lines a double headed arrow will appear and you can drag the box bigger so it will look like this:

Now you can see more than 5 lines at a time while composing a post.

If you pay close attention, something I seem to have a problem with, you will see these lines or something simular on many other boxes in WordPress and other places on the internet.

So, if you ever get irritated that boxes are way to small to write in conveniently then check out the corners and see if there is any way to drag the box bigger.

Leave me a comment and let me know if you have had this problem.  Maybe you did not have this problem but it was something else that almost bit you before you figured out how to do it.

P.S.

Thanks to Dee’s comment below that said:

Hi DeeAnn
I actually changed the number of lines on screen from the dasboard. You can specify how many lines you want, the first time I did I mistyped and added a zero! Try scrolling that many lines! LOL!
I did know that you could drag the corner of the box, just wanted something permanent. Lazy, I guess!
Dee

I am adding a better way to make your box permanently bigger.

You need to go to the Backoffice of WordPress, under settings and choose write.

I never knew that I could do this either. I am definitely going right in and change the number of lines in by box to at least 30.

Thank you so much Dee for adding this to my blog post.

  • I think it took all of us some time to figure that one out Dee Ann so I have a feeling you’re not alone in this.

I don’t remember exactly when I realized that I could expand that box but when I did I was doing a happy dance just like you. Slapping myself upside the head thinking you silly woman.

Now I expand almost every box I’m typing in that has no room to start off with. So I have a feeling you’ve just helped many more people have an aha moment.

    Love this!!! :-)

    Adrienne,

It is really funny how all of that stuff can be right in front of our face and it takes us forever to find it.

Since I found that, that one box expands I have seen so many boxes that expand. I never saw them before.

Makes it so much easier when the box expands.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great week.

    Interesting feature Dee Ann!

I hadn’t really noticed it till now, as I have never really sat down to write anything directly onto WordPress, and do so in word and then paste it onto WP- so that there is nothing very much left to do on it.

But I can well imagine how frustrating it must be to sit and write in a small spaced out area and wishing that you had a larger platform to write. Glad you discovered it :)

    Thanks for sharing :)

    Harleena,

I have written in word also but recently I found it easier just to do it in WP because for me it seemed like there was more editing that needed to be done when I wrote it in word first.

Maybe I just don’t know what I am doing as far as composing it in word for WP.

As long as the box gets bigger I don’t really care where I write it. I just want to be able to see what I am doing.

I am enjoying having a bigger box.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great week.

    Fernando,

Usually I get ideas while I am sleeping, it just so happened that I was on the phone when I realized that the box could get bigger.

Then my friend had to listen to me be hysterical about it. What are friends for but, to share in exciting times?

Yes this comment box can also get bigger or smaller and so can a lot of other boxes across the web.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great week.

    Hi Dee Ann
Thanks for that I had not noticed it before either so I have learnt something new for today :) I try and learn something new every day no matter how small, I have a pad and pen so if something comes into my head or I find that I don’t know how to do something I jot it down and that is my “learn to do it” for that day!

It also would help as ideas for blog posts.

I always learn something from most every post that I read. There is so much to learn on the internet and so many little things that I just do not know or see.

Glad you learned something from my post.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by.

I am so glad that I am not the only one trying to write in a really little box. I would sit there and curse that box the whole time I was writing a post.

It is so much easier now that I figured out how to make the box bigger.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great day.

  • Hi Dee Ann,

It’s like everything else my friend…. It’s only easy when you know how.

I have never written a post in my WP Admin panel so have never had a need to expand the box. Although it will come in handy for some editing and adding images.

I always write my posts in OO writer, even though I have word on my PC, for some strange reason i like OO writer and it does everything I need.

I also keep every post I write and have done so for well over a year, maybe longer. Which was a result after my stupid error last week :(

I’m glad you posted about this Dee Ann as it will make it so much easier for adding images in the exact place I want them.

    Take care, Barry.

PS another video challenge coming soon :)

    Barry,

Several people say that they write their posts off line and do not use the editing box in WP. I think I have done it like that a couple of times and find it to be difficult, so have always done it in WP.

I keep my website really well backed up so I have a copy of all of my posts that way but probably should make a copy of the posts on word or another word processing program as well.

I really do not want to lose my posts.

The good thing about having the blog completely backed up though it I have my comments backed up also.

Looking forward to your next video challenge.

    Thanks for stopping by.

ha ha yes I back make regular back ups as well Dee Ann, my trouble is knowing which hosting service to back up though

My last back up was from Hostgator and due to using CloudFlare my content was going to D9 and back up days are Sundays, D9 deleted my account on the Saturday :(

    We live and learn ;)

I think you’ll like the challenge ;) I’m hoping it’s going to be huge, but more on that later…

    Barry,

I only say that I back up because as you know when I completely lost my entire blog due to the fact that I actually deleted it. My blog was not backed up at all. I guess Hostgator might of had a backup but did not think of that.

I ended up just recreating it myself. Thank goodness I only had posted a few times.

I am still thinking about CloudFlare. I am not sure about it.

Have to look into it more.

I never knew that you could permanently change the number of lines.

I am as lazy as you are so I have already gone and changed the number of lines to 30.

I hate that small box and love having it always big.

Thank you so much and have a great week.

    Hi Dee Ann,

That is something I had not noticed either, but your approach is different to mine. You see, I would have though, ‘Everyone will think I am a complete idiot not knowing that’, so I would have said nothing.

So, I have learned to things today,
1)How to increase the size of the posting box.
2)When you find something new let everyone know, there may be more people like who don’t know.

Thanks Dee Ann for giving me a virtual kick,

    Barry,

I was not sure if I was the only one out there that did not know that or not but it is always safe to assume you are not the only one.

If you are the only one that has not seen something then you had better go and buy a lottery ticket because you probably have a pretty good chance of winning.LOL :) That is what my husband always says. He figures that if you are getting that good of odds one place then you will be able to get that good of odds another.

Seriously though if you find something that you learn how to do it makes a really good blog post. I have gotten ideas for a lot of my blog post from the stupid stuff that I have done or little things I learned to do that I figured everyone else would know but wrote a post about it anyway.

It is always nice to hear that people learned something from my blog posts.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great week.
