This last weekend a virus attached my computer and I had one heck of a time getting rid of it.
While I was working my tail off getting rid of the virus infecting my computer all I could think was “I really should be better about keeping my computer clean, then maybe this would not happen to me”. In reality though I think I downloaded the virus while downloading some free software just recently. This does not however excuse me from doing the maintenance that needs to be done on a regular basis.
Some of my next thoughts were about my blog and what I should be doing for maintenance on it regularly in order to keep it running well.
Like with my computer, I am not as good as I should be at doing maintenance on my blog. We really do need to do regular maintenance on both our computers and blogs in order to keep them virus free and running in a way that they will benefit us.
So, for today’s post I am going to make a list of programs that are useful for maintaining blogs and computers. I know I have mentioned most of these before but thought it would be good to include them all in one post.
Useful Programs To Maintain Blogs
CopyScape it a program that allows you to enter the URL to your blog and find out if your content has been copied and is being used somewhere else on the web.
Put your URL in SiteLiner and it will analyze you blog, telling you if your site has any broken links and what percent of your site is duplicate content.
I found this to be rather interesting and I did not have any broken links according to SiteLiner. That is good.
Broken Link Checker scans webpages for bad hyperlinks.
As time goes by and people who once blogged quit they leave hyperlinks on your blog that lead to nowhere. These bad hyperlinks need to be eliminated so the search engines are not seeing all of the broken links and penalizing you.
Broken Link Checker did find broken links on my blog so I would recommend Broken Link Checker over the SiteLiner for finding broken links.
This tool will tell you the speed your blog loads. This is great information if you feel your blog is loading to slow. You can put in any URL you want so you can check your blog against other blogs.
Pingdom is another webpage speed checker but it gives a little bit different information than the iWebTool does.
This plug in analyzes all of the plugins on your blog. It then tells how much time each plugin is taking up in the load time. This allows you to decide what plugins you want to keep and which ones to get rid of based on how much time they contribute to the load time of your blog.
This tool will clean all of those nasty broken links out of your CommentLuv links. The CommentLuv broken links will not show up in the broken link checker above.
Useful Programs To Maintain Computers
This is a Free tool that cleans all of the temporary files off of your c-drive. After being on the internet for hours I can clean as much as 800 mb off of my hard drive. All of these files make your computer run slow.
There is also a registry cleaner included which works well.
Malwarebytes, also a free tool, is a lifesaver when it comes to identifying malware on a computer and then getting rid of it.
When I ran Malwarebytes on my computer this past weekend it came up with 184 insistentes of malware. Think I should have been using this program sooner.
Between CCleaner and Malwarebytes I was able to get the virus off of my computer.
What about you?
These are the tools I know of to maintain my website and computer.
Do you have any more suggestions? I would love to learn about new or better tools that.
