Social Bookmarking vs. Social Networking – What Is The Difference?
Social book marking sites and social networking sites are very different sites. However both can be used to drive traffic to your blog.
Social Networking sites are sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn just to name a few.
On social networking sites we build a community of friends who we share information with. When developing friends for the purpose of promoting a blog, it is good to find people who are in the same niche and would be interested in what our blog offers. By choosing friends with the same interests we are developing a following of targeted prospects. By building relationships with people we build trust also. While social networking we are allowing people to get to know us both personally and professionally. We can promote our blog to our friends by posting excerpts of posts we make to our blogs along with links.
On Facebook, a Fan Page can also be put up that is dedicated to our blog and the business that goes with it.
Social Bookmarking sites are where you can submit your blog or website and have it circulated to other users of the site that have similar interests.
There are many social bookmarking sites out there. Delicious was the first site that called its self a social bookmarking site. Some other popular sites are Digg and Stumble Upon.
Using these social bookmarking sites can send a large amount of targeted traffic to your blog and create good back links for your blog. This targeted traffic will also contain potential members for your list which will lead to increased sales.
Social bookmarking is just like bookmarking sites on your computer that you want to return to, only in a community of users on the internet. When you bookmark a site it is like voting for that site and other users can see how many votes a site has. The more votes your site gets the more traffic you will get to your site.
Using the social bookmarking sites is easy. Just go to their website and register as a user. Become familiar with the site and how it works. Go and bookmark other peoples blogs that are in your same niche and they will return the favor.
Make it easy for anyone who visits your site to bookmark it. The wordpress plugin SexyBookmarks is a great for adding social bookmarking buttons to your blog.
What are your thoughts about Social Networking and Social Bookmarking? How do they work for you and do you have any suggestions on using them?

Robert,
I have always thought that all of the things with social in them were confusing. I am glad that I could help you understand the differences and what each did.

Both are useful to people who do link building. Personally, between the two, I’d rather choose social bookmarking if I don’t have enough people connected in my social networking account. Otherwise, if I have lots of friends connected with my account, I will choose social networking because of its ability to share links.

Mark,
Yes both are useful and both have their purpose.
We can be so much more social on social networking sites though and being social creatures I think we all like those sites.
It seems that the social bookmarking sites are much less interactive but they still do their job.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Have a great week-end.

Yeah, it’s pretty less interactive but can still be helpful to those people who find it hard to maintain constant communication with others thru social networking sites. Either options are great anyway.

Hi Dee Ann,
Thanks for explaining the difference. With all the technology terms floating around, one can lose track. I tend to spend more time on the social networking sites, but use both and am always on the look out for new ways to expand my reach. Take care.

Cathy,
I find a lot of these things to be very confusing. It seems there are quite a few things out there that have names that sound the same but are very different.
I think most of us spend a lot of time on the networking sites but the bookmarking sites are important to our blogs and getting the word out. There are actually people that surf the bookmarking sites.
I hope my post cleared up the confusion for these two terms for you.
Thanks for stopping by and have a great day.

Hey Dee-Ann
) You really need to work on both & my issue is how to turn the tourists into followers!
Once again very informative, it’s easy to get confused with these things. I’ve found both to be really helpful with building up traffic to my blog. I think (based on my limited experience) that the bookmarking sites can potentially generate more tourist traffic but the networking sites are better for returning traffic (technical terms I know

Baily,
I think you summed up my post very well.
That is something that we all struggle with I think. How to turn the surfer into a regular. I think it is just posting and getting you blog high up in the rankings so it is accepted more as an authority site.
Thanks for the comments and have a great day.
