Where Is My Home Page Tab?

Listen with webreader

Have you ever installed and set up a WordPress theme just to find that there is no page tab for the Homepage?

I was not until got my entire website set up the I realized there was no way to get back to the home page from any other page. Then I started looking around for the home page tab and realized that this theme did not have a home page tab.

I figured out how to put a link to my Homepage in my list of pages.  I thought that i would just share it with you in case there is someone else that had this dilemma. This may not be the only way or the most correct way of doing it but it does work.

To start out I went to Links in the left menu of my WordPress back office and chose Link Categories.

I added a new Category called “Pages“.

After I had a Category I went back to Links and chose Add New. I then added all of the pages that I wanted people to be able to get to in as links under the category Pages.

Now go to Appearance and Widgets. In the Widgets area drag the Links widget to the side bar you want it to be on.

You will now have a box on your side bar labeled Pages with links to all of the pages including the Homepage.

I also used the following plugin My Link Order.    This plugin allows you to put the links in a specific order.

If you look at my sidebar you will see my Pages box with the Homepage at the top of the list.

I hope this helps someone out.

If you have a different or better way of creating a Homepage Link on a WordPress theme that does not have one, leave it in a comment below.

I am always looking for new and better ways of accomplishing things.

    Hi Dee Ann,
Well you did send me scurrying to look at my blogsites (whew I’m OK).
You don’t want to be like Dorothy in the Wizard Of Oz with no way of getting home.

    Riley,

I think I felt like Dorothy when I realized that I could not get back to home on my blog.

I very quickly set about figuring out a way to get there.

    Thanks for stopping by.

Hey DeeAnn! Every time I ever found a theme I liked that didn’t have a home link, I always ditched it thinking there was no way to get one. Thanks for the great tip!

    Cheryl,

Thanks for stopping buy. I am glad this helped.

I was pretty stumped when I went to a page that had a post on it and could not get home.

At that point I set out to figure it out. Don’t know why there would be no link to a homepage on a theme.

It can really be frustrating to have a good theme and lack something important as a homepage link. Sometimes I also don’t use the theme no matter how I like it. Though I mostly figure a way out to be able to fix the problem. I think you did a great job in putting a homepage link in your blog. :)

    Ira,

It is very frustrating and there have been times when I have really liked a theme and not used it because it was lacking something.

This seemed like a simple enough fix though so I am still using it. I also did not want to take the time to set up another theme.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

  • Hi Dee Ann,

In the past when I was searching for free blog themes for some of my other blogs, I found that the tabs weren’t across the top of the page which is where I prefer having them. I don’t care for them over to the side, people don’t always go over there to locate them. So I would just go find another theme and start all over.

But this post was very helpful for everyone else who may have run into the same problem and don’t mind their pages being listed in the right sidebar. Very helpful indeed.

    Thanks for this.

I agree with you. I like the tabs up at the top also and have actually found another theme that I want to use but have not gotten to it yet. It is on my list of things to do.

This did solve the problem for the time being though.

    Thanks for the comment.

    Linda,

I think this is the first theme I have seen without a homepage tab. I am sure there are more out there.

This is just what came to my mind as a fix at the time and it was easy.

    Hi Dee,

How’s it going? I hope all is good. Good information on how to set up a home page link.

A lot of people can’t find their way home with the pro sense theme. Nice job helping others find their way home.

We all have our own different ways of doing things. If you go to my blog you will see my homepage link stand out at the top right, you can’t miss it.

Back then I was frustrated and really needed to get home.

There is also a way to turn your whole header into a link to your homepage.

Been looking around so I can put the information in my comment to you but can’t find it. I can’t remember where and when I saw it.

Thanks for this post. It’s really good to know there is a plug in to get your links in the order you want. Terrific information Dee!

    Until next time,

I have been to your blog. When I realized that I could not get home I went and looked at other peoples blogs using the same theme and looked at what they had done for a home page tab. Don’t know just how you did it but it gave me an idea.

That would be interesting to make your entire header a link to the home page. I may look into it.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

I had a very similar situation with my business blog right after we re-designed it, I was like… WHAT!? Haha, we fixed it quick through the theme which was nice.

Thanks for coming by and leaving a comment.

It is pretty startling to be on a page of the blog and realize there is no way to get home.

If you are designing your own theme then fixing it proper would be the thing to do.

  • Hi Dee Ann,

Another great lesson that’ll help people. When i first started using this theme i had the same trouble :(

In the end I cheated ;) I went to my HTML editor and created a link to my home page (to open on the same page). I then pasted the code into a new widget and called it return to home page (original) and then placed it towards the top of my sidebar.

Thanks for the info on My Link Order I’ve installed it and set it up ;)

Catch up again soon Dee Ann, keep these excellent lessons coming :)

    Barry,

I cheated also but I think you cheated in a harder way than I did.

I like what you did and it is a great solution to the problem of getting lost(that is what I felt like when I could not get home) and not being able to get home on this theme.

Thanks for sharing how you solved the problem.

I know there is more than one way to solve this problem and it is great to hear what others did.

I think I am just lazy and always take the easy way if I can.

Thank you Barry for stopping by and commenting.
