Why Videos?

by Dee Ann Rice on May 9, 2012

Do you do videos for your blog posts with some regularity?

If you don’t, you should!

I have not done a lot of videos but, I have done some off and on. My goal is to do at least one video a month over the next year.

A while ago I took part in a video challenge hosted by Barry Wells and that month I did 4 vidoes.

Why do vidoes though? Isn’t a written post as good?

Videos Get Traffic

Sometimes it may be true that written posts are as good as videos and this post is not going to be a video post even though it is about videos. I may however include a video in this post.

YouTube videos get a lot of traffic separate from your post. If you put a link to your blog in your video as well as in the description on YouTube then your blog will also get some traffic from the video.

If you put videos in your post with some regularity you have a better chance of producing a video that gets lots of traffic and in turn sends traffic back to your blog.

My Best Video

Back in September of 2011 I did a post called Pinterest – Bookmarking Fun!

Now at the time Pinterest was not popular like it is today.

I had been visiting at my son’s home and my daughter-in-law told me about it.

I would love to pin some of the internet marketing posts that I find.

When I first looked at Pinterest, my only thought was “I would love to pin some of the internet marketing posts I like here!”

At that time posting anything but craft ideas was absolutely unheard of and Pinterest was thought to be for only women.

I came home and immediately wrote a post on Pinterest. Not only did I write a post I also made a video. In the video I told what Pinterest was and showed how to use it. I showed how to pin internet marketing posts and talked about it being similar to bookmarking.

At the beginning of this post I said this post was going to be about using videos in posts, not a video post and that I might include one video. Here is the video.  This is the YouTube video I made on Pinterest. You may of already seen it when I posted it back in September so, in that case you will probably not want to watch it again.

When I decided to do a post on Pinterest, I could have just used text and screen shots but I like doing videos so I decided to make a video.

I made the video, wrote the post, put the video in the post and forgot about that post a few weeks later.

Fast forward to March 29, 2012 …

I for some reason was looking at my YouTube account and how many views different videos had. Most of my videos had between 25 and 200 views.

I Never Dreamed …

Then I saw the Pinterest video made 6 months or so earlier. It had 9500. I never dreamed I could create a video that would get 9500 views. The views continue to increase and today it has been viewed 13,475 times. The number of views has increased about 4ooo views in the last 6 or 7 weeks.

I know this is nothing compared to some of those videos on YouTube that have millions of views but, for me this is a lot.

In addition to the video getting all of those views, the post the video was in is my most viewed post at 542 views. This is also at least twice the number of views as most of my posts get.

It Pays To Make Video

If I had only done a written post for Pinterest I would never have received the traffic I have.

This is a great reason to put a video post on you blog with some regularity. You never know when you will make a video that will get lots of views.

Do you make videos? Have you had a video that has lots of views? Leave a comment and let me know about your videos.

Loved the post Dee Ann!

Wow! Those many views on the Pinterest video is awesome indeed! And yes, I don’t think you would have got those many clicks on your post if it had been a simple text article. Moreover, that time Pinterest wasn’t as poplar as it is now. And with it gaining more popularity daily, people are loving your video as it explains everything so well and in detail.

Videos sure are effective and convey a lot in a shorter time span, something that people are able to grasp faster.

I know I have to start with videos one day and I hope to do so really soon. There’s a lot to learn and cover when it comes to making videos, and thanks to you and other wonderful bloggers, I would be able to do that with ease I hope.

Thanks for sharing and a wonderful reminder to get started. :)

Harleena,

I was truly amazed that I got so many views on that video.

Timing was a huge part of it but, who would of thought that Pinterest would of become so popular.

It always pays to make a video just in case what you are making a video on does become popular or the video goes viral for some reason.

I don’t think I do enough videos but, I do do some.

I love videos when it comes to learning how to do something new because I can see just how it is done.

You will do fabulous videos when you start and it will really add to your blog.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great day.

Hi Dee Ann,

Thanks for the mention :)

As you know I love creating and learning from videos as we simply Watch, Pause and Apply and I don’t think it gets any easier than that :)

It’s great to see that you’ve been getting so many views for both your post and your videos and it just goes to show the power behind them.

YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine online so that has to tell us something.

They do say the early bird catches the worm and the fact that your video was online before Pinterest became so popular shows that you were ahead of the game, congratulations

Best of luck with your future videos Dee Ann,
Barry

Barry,

I think the fact that I was ahead of the game was an accident. It was nothing that I did intentionally. I wish I could take credit for being on top of things enough to figure out that it was a good time to do a video on Pinterest as it was brand new and no one was using it.

My only thinking was that other people may be interested in learning how to use this tool that I just found.

I am glad that I was ahead of the game on this one though.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great day.

Hi Dee,

Do you mean fast forward to March 29th 2012? ( You’ve put 2011)

I had an article to video made for me very cheaply a couple of years ago by someone on the Warrior Forum. He was also offering to send me views. My video which I uploaded to YouTube got a few thousand views quite quickly but whether it brought me any traffic to my site I couldn’t tell. I wasn’t savvy enough then to track the link.

I contacted him again recently to get some views to another video but he was not doing it any more. I guess fiverr is the place to go now for the views to get the ball rolling.

I have had it on my to do list since the beginning of the year to make some videos for my blog. This has spurred me on!

Sandy,

Yes I meant to put 2012. I have changed it now. Thank you.

I have never hired someone to get me views on my videos. I am not sure that would get the traffic to the blog post.

I really did nothing to get these views except to have posted a video on the right topic at the right time. Which was pretty much accidental. If you actually put up videos with some regularity though you have a better chance of hitting the right time with one of your videos.

Good luck with your videos. I love doing videos.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great day.

Hi Dee Ann,

Video only makes the explaining better. Video makes understanding better. Your blog post gets better with a video on it. It’s like sugar.

If you are not videoing you are not maximizing your efforts to full potential.

Terry,

That is so true. I love how you compare a video to sugar on the top. That is really what a video is.

You said what I was trying to say so much better and in a few words.

It is that sugar that gets the attention. Without that sugar my post would not have received the views it did.

Thanks Terry.

Hey Dee Ann,

First off, congrats on your success with the video.

Second, thanks for the post. You do explain how videos can help us bloggers to get more traffic. But, I think it depends. For instance: Your video was about Pinterest (and Pinterest has becoming more popular for the last 2-3 months; so more people are searching more the term Pinterest, hence you get more views, and those views converted into visits to your blog). But, I guess we still can get more visits from videos (I think that because I have seen many bloggers, including several of my friends getting more traffic through it).

I haven’t done that many videos, just a few. I didn’t have much success with it. But I still plan to do more videos in the future. Thanks to inspiration that I get from people like you :)

Anyways, thank you for sharing the information, Dee Ann,

Jeevan

Jeevan,

Yes, I was lucky with my Pinterest video because Pinterest was not popular when I did the video but has become very popular since then.

You never know when something you do a video on will become popular though or will be something that will draw a lot of traffic. If you never do videos though you never have the chance of a video getting lots of traffic.

I really did not have any idea that my Pinterest video would receive so many hits when I did it or that Pinterest would become so popular.

My only thing is to encourage others to make videos.

Thanks for stopping by.

Yeah, you are right about that. When I entered Barry’s challenge, I was kind of confused on topic (because every topic I can think, someone else have already made a video on it). But, then I realized that it was just like blog posts. My video would be different from someone elses’. I would be certainly making videos in the coming future.

No problem and thanks again for the post!

Isn’t it exciting when you check your stats and they’ve gone through the roof and you had NO idea! I’ve got one video as you know that is over the million mark now with views and it’s three years old and continues to climb. Talk about surprised and happy.

Videos are huge and especially when you’re explaining something. It’s just so much easier to learn that way which is why your Pinterest video took off. It’s the newest trend and we all want to learn so your video did a fabulous job.

Congratulations on that too Dee Ann and wonderful post. Hope people will take your advice and start adding those videos.

Wow, over a million that is amazing. I thought I was doing good at over 10,000.

Videos are amazing. I think it is the easiest way to explain something.

I really do love doing videos.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great day.

Enjoy the journey.

Thank you.

I really enjoy making videos and they are great for getting traffic. I also think it is easier to explain a process in a video. I like following videos when I am learning something new as I can see how what I am learning is actually done.

Hi Dee Ann

Firstly apologies for my absence in recent weeks it has been a trying time what with one thing and another. But things are back on an even keel now!

Congratulations on the post and Video Dee Ann superb results with the stats :)

I must admit I really love creating videos especially the “How to Videos” and learning from them, recently I have viewed some truly great videos. From a personal point of view I get much more from a video than the written word.

And as you know Dee Ann creating videos can be so much fun and does not have to cost the earth to start either.

Once again Dee Ann Congratulations on the video and a great post – I do hope people take your advice and start creating videos.

Look forward to your next video Dee Ann! ;)

Take care, catch up soon

Video can drive a ton of targeted traffic. Plus, it keeps people on your site longer and keeps them more engaged. It also is an awesome branding tool.

One of the things we must always seek to do if we want to become go-to internet marketing coaches or authorities is that we must get people to know, like, and trust us.

There is no better way—other than in-person—to do that than with video.

Dee Ann RiceNo Gravatar May 28, 2012 at 2:31 pm

Bill,

That is really true. The best way to get people to know, like and trust us is in person and the closest thing to in person on the internet is a video.

I love videos and plan on doing more of them this year.

Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Dee Ann,

I like this post, because once again it has to do with ‘a picture – or in this case a video – tells more than a thousand words’. I am not sure yet about producing my own video’s. We’ll see.
Maybe the fact that viewers/readers like to watch a picture or a video is the relative short time they are willing to stay on a blog post that’s ‘just’ plain text.
Guess that’s how our mind works…

Jan,

That is true a video is just a moving picture. Pictures do speak a 1000 words and we all love pictures.

I love using pictures and videos in my posts. I am trying to use more videos as I really believe that is the wave of the future.

Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Dee Ann, First I want to tell you how grateful I am meeting you via Adrienne Smith. What an exciting post. Congrats my friend. I know the importance of video’s on our posts for SEO traffic. I must spill the truth that I am guilty! I know I’m supposed to do more, but I just got into a funk. This post has made me realize how important it is.
As for Pinterest- I put up a video and really didn’t keyword it but just took a shot. I did get a lot of followers. Not compared to you lol! But it did help.
Reading this has given me more incentive to get in front of that camera. I truly appreciate it.

Donna,

I am glad that I gave you incentive to get in front of the camera. Doing videos really is an important part of blogging today.

I really do not know why my Pinterest video did so well except that I accidentally did a video on how to use something that most people did not know about at the time. Then that something (Pinterest) became really popular and everyone wanted to know how to use it.

The real significance though is if I had never done the video I would never have gotten that exposure. I think that is why we should continue to do videos. We never know when we will do one that will get a lot of traffic.

Thanks for stopping by.
